Press release

 Give a dollar for change
Armed with the catchy campaign fund raisng slogan, "Give A Dollar For Change," I am running for public office this year with the goal of being a voice for those who are losing their homes, for people who desperately need a job, for all the hard working people who simply can't keep up with the constant demands of the bill collector on the telephone or the taxman at the door.
Unlike the other candidates, I understand how it is to have a hard time finding a job for yourself and your children. My goal will be, not to give more to those who have but to give enough to those who need.
I will cut the excess size and scope of our bloated federal, state, and local governments while keeping taxes down and doing everything I can to create jobs, especially in the world of small business, which I know so well.
I will fight to bring our troops home now from Afghanisan and Iraq, while investing more in homeland security and better communication amongst our law enforcement agencies.
Above all, I will do everything I can to be the candidate of the forgotten middle class and working poor in America, who have worked too hard for too little for too long.

EDDIE EGRIU WILL RUN IN 2010
Today I am announcing that I have formed an exploratory committee preparatory to announcing my intention to run for 28th congressional district WNY. in 2010.
Why have I decided to run?
I am taking this momentous step because I believe that, in an era when self serving professional politicians dominate the corridors of power in Washington, it is time for a real WNYer: A businesssman, a working man, a taxpayer, a loving husband and father, to be given the opportunity to serve the ongoing needs of the people of our community.
Who am I to even consider running for public office, some members of our area's political eilite might ask. And, it's true, I'm NOT a professional politician or a lawyer or a political boss like most of those who have made such a mess out of our economy in recent decades. Just like most WNYers, I am a parent who worries about whether my sons and daughters are going to have as good a life as I have enjoyed in our great nation.Just like them, I sit home trying to figure out why it is that Wall Street fat cats and corporate incompetents have all been given untold billions to squander while average Americans like us are still waiting for our bailout!
What is my platform?
I will run on a platform that will put my primary emphasis on creating good paying jobs for all of our people by cutting taxes and government spending while ensuring access to affordable health care for all.
How will I raise funds?
I will do so by asking all of my supporters to contribute only a single "DOLLAR FOR A CHANGE," rather than relying on fat cats or millionaires.
Thanks again for your time time and attention. I look forward to seeing you and speaking with at greater length as my campaign continues.
¡¡
YOURS SINCERELY,
EDDIE EMIN EGRIU

 Egriu for change

Today I Emin Eddie Egriu am writing to you, my friends and fellow members of our nation's Albanian-American community, to announce that I have formed an exploratory committee preparatory to announcing my candidacy for the 28th District Congressional seat in NY.

Why have I decided to run?

I am taking this momentous step because I believe that, in an era when self serving professional politicians dominate the corridors of power in Washington, it is time for someone who is one of us: A businessman, a working man, a taxpayer, a loving husband and father, to be given the opportunity to serve the people of America in the House of Representatives.

While I may have to introduce myself to at least some of the hard working voters of the 28th, I know that this will not be necessary with regard to our country's large and growing Albanian-American community. Through the years, we have fought many fights and won many victories together.

When the heroic people of Kosovo were threatened with annihilation by the homicidal madman, Slobodan Milosevic, it was you and I, together, who joined forces to mobilize the might of the USA and NATO in a coordinated effort that replaced bloody despair with burgeoning hope. It was you and I together who have fought side by side whenever the rights of Albanian have been jeopardized by the forces of bigotry and hatred. Now it is time for us to march together once more, this time, toward the goal of putting an Albanian-American community activist, someone who has spoken up for our people from the Bill O'Reilly Show to the White House, in the Congress of the United States. Born in Dibra, Macedonia, my family was forced to leave Yugoslavia because of my businessman father's Abedin Din Egriu courageous opposition to communism. Whom orchestrated the largest rally in 1981 in NY Against Former Yugoslavia. Also My Uncle Ibrahim Imi Egriu whom had to leave Yugoslavia due to my fathers activism. Today he is known as big voice for the Albanian Community, While my brother Naxhi John Egriu joined the KLA, Battalion Atlantic 1998 - 1999 . I became a voice for Albanians that was heard from the UN to the Oval Office during the Kosovo crisis and Macedonian crisis. Together with Albanian American Civic League and National Albanian American Council and others. Still, I have mainly concentrated on community issues here in the Western New York area. I regularly employ underprivileged workers in my own business. I have also served as a project director and teacher for a PUSH Buffalo's program that teaches unemployed Buffalonians gainful construction skills, turning tax burdens into taxpayers on a regular basis.

What is my platform? I will run on a platform that will put the primary emphasis on creating good paying jobs for all of our people by cutting taxes and government spending while ensuring access to affordable health care for all. Instead of relying on the generosity of a few fat cats to finance my efforts, I will, instead, ask each of my supporters to "GIVE A DOLLAR FOR SOME CHANGE." Armed with the strong support of my fellow Albanians and the small contributions of average working people, I know I can run an effective campaign that will bring a well deserved victory to my fellow Albanian-Americans.

In the weeks and months ahead, I will be keeping you posted on the progress of my campaign. In the mean time, I hope you will see fit to send me an initial contribution that will start the ball rolling and send me on my way to the House.

Thanks again for your time and I look forward to seeing you and speaking with you soon. We have made history together before. Now it is time for us to make history together again!

Second Chances: Rehabbing A Home And A Community

Second Chances: Rehabbing A Home And A Community

Story Options

It's a lesson in forgiveness, hope and community. A forgotten West side home has been rehabilitated into several cooperative apartments, and with it, a youth and a community have been given a second chance.

It all started in November 2005 when the site of the Massachusetts Avenue Project fell victim to arson, at the hands of a neighborhood youth. Instead of prosecuting the young man, and perpetuating the cruel cycle of the streets, the Urban Community Corporation and PUSH gave him a job and chance to make things right.

Now, Carlos Ortiz and nearly 40 other youth in the community can stand proud in front of the apartment house at Massachusetts and 19th avenues and know that, instead of destruction, they have created a something wonderful  a home that can help to rebuild a community.

You gave me a second chance and the opportunity to prove that I¡¯m better than just making mistakes on the street,¡± a grateful Carlos said at the ribbon cutting ceremony yesterday. Through his job rehabbing the home, which was saved from the city's demo list, Carlos has learned skills that will help him be something ¨C instead of just another statistic. Maybe one day he will be a contractor, he said, just like Eddie Egriu, the project director who rebuilt the house.

The partnership between PUSH and the UCC is the kind of cooperation and hope that can rebuild community and revitalize too often often forgotten parts of our city. ¡°PUSH wants to rehab your neighborhood. UCC wants to rehab the kids in your neighborhood that you¡¯ve forgotten about,¡± Egriu said.

Aaron Bartley of PUSH called the project a tremendous challenge and a learning experience that will guide the groups in their future partnerships, as they take on similar projects in their quest to rebuild the community, one house at a time. It is going to be a battle, but one that can change the people and the community.

How are we going to win the war on poverty without a battle? How are we going to change the city without a battle?! Egriu asked. Those that battle, accomplish.!

This battle, and this victory, means community members can have the chance to build their lives from this safe and stable home, in a program designed to stimulate home ownership in the West Side neighborhood. It also means that dedicated people like Augustine Gilchrist can stay, avoid the hassle of absentee landlords, and eventually transition to owning their own homes" a factor that will stabilize and bring people back to the area.

I met PUSH and my hope began there, and it ends here,¡± said Gilchrist, one of the first residents in the new house. ¡°This is something the community needs more of ¨C they¡¯re the model suites for better things to come.

Residents of the house pay below-market rent for one of the newly renovated apartments, and PUSH puts aside $75 a month of that for the renter, which is then matched by a federal program. That means that, if the resident stays in the home for 2 to 3 years, they can walk away with nearly $6,000 of savings in their pocket to help them buy a new home. The organizations already have their eye on another house in the neighborhood, and the partnerships and sponsors established from this first project will hopefully lead them strongly to a brighter future for the neighborhood and the city.

¡°This is a mere step, said J. Luis Acosta of the UCC. We want to be able to take over the block [ can you help us? So then we can take over the next block, and the next [ we can't do it without you.
